Business Women who
broke the glass ceiling
BY TOLUNA TEAM BELGIUM
All over the world, women are fighting for
equality, especially in the workplace.
Although there is still plenty of progress to
be made, we are shedding light on two bold
and brilliant ladies who took hammers to
the glass ceiling that tried to keep them
down in the worlds of business and finance.
This invisible but impermeable barrier that
limits the career advancement of women is
still out there. Let these women serve as
inspiration for all women who are still
Kathryn Kolbert fighting their way to the top.
Kathryn Kolbert is a woman of many talents. As a
renowned civil-rights lawyer who has long fought for
women’s and reproductive rights, she has been
recognized by the American Lawyer as one of 45 public-
interest lawyers "whose vision and commitment are
changing lives.” In 2009, Kolbert became the Founding
Director of the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at
Barnard College, NY, a center dedicated to the
advancement of women's leadership around the world.
Before, she served as the president of People for the
American Way, a progressive organization dedicated to
equality under the law. Furthermore, she is the Co-
Founder of the Athena Film Festival, a festival to
highlight work by women filmmakers and stories about
women.
“in terms of leadership, you only can change the world
if women get beyond their gender and can contribute
equally within any kind of organization or entity. And as
long as they’re a minority in whatever role they’re
playing, their gender is the only issue people are
looking at them for, rather than the huge contributions
they bring to the table. The fact that we still count
arrivals and departures of female executives is
testament to how much remains to be done.“
